A Hundi is an indigenous, informal negotiable instrument (like a bill of exchange) used by Indian traders to remit money and secure credit.

A Hundi developed as a customary financial instrument in the Indian trading community. It works much like a bill of exchange: it carries an unconditional written order to pay a fixed sum, is transferable, and is honoured on the strength of trust between merchants. Traders used Hundis both to send money safely across distances and to arrange short-term credit for buying and selling goods.
