Social responsibilities of business are of four types: economic, legal, ethical and discretionary (philanthropic).

  1. Economic responsibility — As an economic unit, a business is responsible for producing goods and services that society needs, and selling them at a fair price to earn a reasonable profit. This is its most basic responsibility.

  2. Legal responsibility — Every business must operate within the framework of the laws of the country, such as company law, tax laws, labour laws and environmental laws. Obeying the law is a fundamental social responsibility.
