This is a favourite opening question in Karnataka 1st PUC Economics because it links directly to the definition of economics. Every resource — land, labour, capital, money — is limited in supply. At the same time, the same resource can be used in several different ways: a piece of land can grow rice, or wheat, or be used to build a factory. When a resource can serve more than one purpose (alternative uses), using it for one thing automatically means not using it for another.
