A project develops in ordered stages; the first four are identifying the problem, choosing the target group, collecting data, and then organising & presenting it.

Every statistical project in the Karnataka 1st PUC Statistics for Economics course follows a set sequence so that the enquiry stays focused and the conclusions are trustworthy. The first four steps are:

  1. Identifying a problem / fixing the objective — Decide clearly what you want to find out (for example, "reading habits of students" or "monthly expenditure of families"). A sharply defined objective keeps the whole project on track.
  2. Choice of the target group (population) — Decide from whom the information will be gathered — the specific group of people or units whose behaviour you wish to study, and whether you will study all of them (census) or a part of them (sample).
  3. Collection of data — Actually gather the required information from the target group using a suitable method such as a questionnaire, interview or observation. This may be primary data (collected fresh by you) or secondary data. …
