Statistical tools process numbers but cannot supply judgement; without common sense, even a correct figure (like an average) can mislead — as with a river of "average" depth 1.5 m that is 4 m deep at the middle.

The Karnataka 1st PUC Statistics for Economics course stresses that statistical methods are tools, not a replacement for human reasoning. A statistical method will faithfully calculate an average, a percentage or a correlation from whatever data it is given — but it cannot decide:

  • whether the data collected is relevant and reliable,
  • whether the method chosen is appropriate, or
  • whether the conclusion drawn actually makes sense in the real situation.
