(a)(i) RBC (erythrocytes) - transport respiratory gases, mainly oxygen (bound to haemoglobin) from the lungs to body tissues, and help transport some CO2 back. (ii) Eosinophils - resist infections and are particularly involved in allergic reactions and defence against parasitic (helminth) infections. (iii) Platelets (thrombocytes) - essential for blood clotting (coagulation), releasing clotting factors at the site of an injury to stop bleeding. (b) In an open circulatory system, blood is pumped out of the heart into open body spaces/sinuses (haemocoel) and directly bathes the tissues before returning to the heart (seen in arthropods and most molluscs) - it operates at lower pressure and is less efficient. In a closed circulatory system, blood flows entirely within a closed network of blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins) and never directly contacts the tissues (seen in annelids and vertebrates) - it operates at higher pressure, giving faster, more controlled circulation.
