[!TLDR]

A metal's stress-strain curve: a straight-line (Hooke's law) region from the origin up to the proportional/elastic limit; beyond this it curves to a yield point where plastic deformation begins; stress continues to rise (with strain hardening) to the ultimate tensile stress point; then the curve falls (necking) until the fracture point where the wire breaks. If unloaded from a point beyond the elastic limit, the curve returns parallel to the original loading line but does not pass through the origin — the residual strain remaining at zero stress is the 'permanent set'.
