Imagine you are working on a group project for a school exhibition. If two different classmates give you separate instructions — one tells you to paint the backdrop blue, and the other tells you to paint it green — you will be confused. Worse, if both of them are your "bosses" for the task, you cannot decide whose order to follow first. That confusion and conflict is exactly what the principle of Unity of Command is designed to prevent.
In management, Unity of Command means that every employee should receive orders from only one superior. It is a formal, written principle first introduced by Henri Fayol, one of the founding fathers of modern management theory. The idea is simple: if a person reports to two or more bosses at the same time, they will face divided loyalty, conflicting priorities, and a breakdown of discipline.
The NCERT Class 12 Business Studies textbook states: "Unity of Command means that an employee should receive orders from only one superior. This principle helps in avoiding confusion and conflict."
Why does this matter in real organisations? Consider a factory floor worker. If the production manager tells him to speed up output, but the quality control manager tells him to slow down and check every piece carefully, he cannot satisfy both. The result is either poor quality, low output, or a stressed worker who ignores one boss. Unity of Command removes this dilemma. It creates a clear, single line of authority from the top to the bottom of the organisation.
This principle is closely related to another concept called Scalar Chain — the chain of command from the CEO down to the lowest employee. Unity of Command ensures that this chain is not broken by having an employee report to multiple people at the same level.
Here are the key takeaways for your exams:
- One boss, one set of orders. No employee should be answerable to more than one superior for the same task.
- Prevents confusion and conflict. When instructions come from a single source, the employee knows exactly what to do and whom to hold accountable. …

This leads to confusion among the employees regarding the reporting as well as differentiation of work. Which principle of Henri Fayol is violated here?(a) Unity of command(b) Unity of direction(c) Initiative(d) Order
›Reveal solutionSolution
School Time has violated Fayol's principle of Unity of Direction.
Henri Fayol's principle of Unity of Direction states that all activities having the same objective should be directed by one manager, using one plan — this ensures unified action, coordination and focused effort. It is different from Unity of Command (one employee, one boss for giving orders); Unity of Direction is about one head/plan per objective (i.e., per product line or department), not about reporting lines for an individual.
In School Time's case, stationery, school bags and school uniforms are three distinct product lines — each ideally needs its own objective, plan and directing head. Because the same single unit/department handles all three without differentiated plans or leadership for each, employees become confused about:
- which plan/targets they are working to,
- how work should be divided among the three product lines, …

›Reveal solutionSolution
Unity of Command (Henri Fayol) insists an employee should receive orders from, and report to, only one superior — not that every boss has one employee, and not that orders can come from several bosses at once.
Fayol listed Unity of Command among his 14 principles of management. The idea is simple but important: if a subordinate takes instructions from more than one superior at the same time, the instructions may conflict, authority gets diluted, discipline suffers, and the subordinate ends up confused about whose order to follow. The principle therefore fixes responsibility clearly — one person, one boss — which makes it easier to know who is accountable for what.
