A simultaneous shift of demand and supply changes equilibrium price and quantity in a way that depends on the direction and relative magnitude of the two shifts.

In perfect competition, equilibrium is where the market demand and supply curves intersect. When both curves shift together, the new equilibrium depends on how large each shift is. The main cases:

Case 1: Both demand and supply increase (rightward shift).

  • Equilibrium quantity definitely rises (both shifts push quantity up).
  • Equilibrium price is ambiguous: if the increase in demand is larger than the increase in supply, price rises; if the increase in supply is larger, price falls; if they are equal, price stays the same.

Case 2: Both demand and supply decrease (leftward shift).

  • Equilibrium quantity definitely falls.
  • Equilibrium price is ambiguous: it rises if demand falls less than supply, falls if demand falls more than supply, and is unchanged if the two fall equally.

Case 3: Demand increases and supply decreases.

  • Equilibrium price definitely rises (both changes push price up).
  • Equilibrium quantity is ambiguous: it rises if the demand increase dominates, falls if the supply decrease dominates.

Case 4: Demand decreases and supply increases.

  • Equilibrium price definitely falls.
  • Equilibrium quantity is ambiguous: it rises if the supply increase dominates, falls if the demand decrease dominates. …
