A market economy works through the price mechanism: demand and supply interact freely, prices adjust to their equilibrium, and prices act as signals answering what, how and for whom to produce.

In a market (capitalist) economy there is no central planning authority. Economic activities are coordinated by the price mechanism:

  • Consumers decide what to buy based on prices and their preferences, expressing demand.
  • Producers decide what and how much to produce based on prices and the profit motive, expressing supply.
