TP_L = total output of all labour; MP_L = extra output from one more labour unit; AP_L = output per unit of labour (TP_L / L).

In the theory of production (Karnataka 2nd PUC), when labour (L) is the variable factor, three product concepts are defined:

  • Total Product of Labour (TP_L): The total quantity of output produced by all the units of labour employed, with other factors held fixed. As more labour is used, total product generally rises, reaches a maximum and may then fall.

  • Marginal Product of Labour (MP_L): The addition made to total product when one more unit of labour is employed.

    MP_L = TP at L − TP at (L−1) = change in TP / change in L

  • Average Product of Labour (AP_L): The total product per unit of labour, obtained by dividing total product by the number of labour units.

    AP_L = TP_L / L
