Mutualism (+/+) is an interaction that benefits both interacting species; examples include lichens, mycorrhiza, plant-pollinator relationships and Rhizobium-legume association.

Mutualism: It is a close, positive interaction between two different species in which both the interacting species are benefited (represented as +/+). It is an obligatory or facultative association where each partner depends on the other for a benefit such as food, shelter, protection or transport of pollen/seeds.

Four examples of mutualism:

  1. Lichens: A mutualistic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic alga or cyanobacterium. The alga provides food (by photosynthesis) and the fungus provides shelter, water and minerals.

  2. Mycorrhiza: A mutualistic association between fungi and the roots of higher plants. The fungus absorbs water and minerals (especially phosphorus) for the plant, and the plant supplies food (sugars) to the fungus.

  3. Plant-pollinator mutualism: Many flowering plants are pollinated by insects/animals. The animal (e.g. an insect, bird) gets nectar/pollen as food, and the plant gets its pollen transferred for fertilisation. A classic example is the fig tree and its species-specific pollinator wasp. …
