N(t+1) = N(t) + [(B + I) - (D + E)]; population density changes through the four processes of natality (births), mortality (deaths), immigration (in) and emigration (out).

a) Equation for population density at time t+1 (1 mark):

N(t+1) = N(t) + [(B + I) - (D + E)]

where:

  • N(t+1) = population density at time t+1
  • N(t) = population density at time t
  • B = number of births (natality)
  • I = number of immigrants
  • D = number of deaths (mortality)
  • E = number of emigrants

The population density will increase if (B + I) is more than (D + E); otherwise it will decrease.

b) The four basic processes (4 marks):

Population density fluctuates due to changes in the following four basic processes, of which two (natality and immigration) add individuals and two (mortality and emigration) remove them:

  1. Natality (B): The number of births during a given period in the population that are added to the initial density. It increases the population.

  2. Mortality (D): The number of deaths in the population during a given period. It decreases the population.

  3. Immigration (I): The number of individuals of the same species that have come into the habitat from elsewhere during the time period under consideration. It increases the population. …
