IUDs prevent pregnancy by increasing sperm phagocytosis, releasing Cu ions that immobilise sperm, and releasing hormones that make the endometrium unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to sperm.

Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs) are contraceptive devices inserted by a doctor/nurse into the uterus through the vagina. They are of three types — non-medicated (e.g. Lippes loop), copper-releasing (CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375) and hormone-releasing (Progestasert, LNG-20). Their modes of action:

  1. Increased phagocytosis of sperms — IUDs increase the phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus (immune/leucocyte response), reducing the number of viable sperms.
