An effective collision is one with enough energy and the right orientation to give products; for a first-order reaction t1/2=0.693/kt_{1/2}=0.693/k has no concentration term, so it is independent of [R]0[R]_0.

a) Effective collision

According to collision theory, molecules must collide to react, but not every collision leads to products. An effective collision is a collision that results in the formation of product molecules.

Two factors (conditions) responsible for an effective collision:

  1. Energy factor — the colliding molecules must possess energy equal to or greater than the threshold (activation) energy.
  2. Orientation factor — the molecules must collide with the proper orientation so that bonds can break and form.

b) Half-life of a first-order reaction

The integrated first-order rate law is:

k=2.303tlog⁡[R]0[R]k = \frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{[R]_0}{[R]}

At the half-life t=t1/2t = t_{1/2}, the concentration falls to half: [R]=[R]02[R] = \dfrac{[R]_0}{2}. Substituting:

k=2.303t1/2log⁡[R]0[R]0/2=2.303t1/2log⁡2k = \frac{2.303}{t_{1/2}}\log\frac{[R]_0}{[R]_0/2} = \frac{2.303}{t_{1/2}}\log 2

t1/2=2.303×0.3010k=0.693kt_{1/2} = \frac{2.303\times0.3010}{k} = \frac{0.693}{k} …
