In the H2H_2–O2O_2 fuel cell, H2H_2 is oxidised at the anode and O2O_2 is reduced at the cathode; the cathode reaction is O2+2H2O+4e−→4OH−O_2 + 2H_2O + 4e^- \rightarrow 4OH^-.

Hydrogen-oxygen (H2-O2) fuel cell with porous carbon electrodes in aqueous KOH; H2 oxidised at the anode, O2 reduced at the cathode.
Hydrogen-oxygen (H2-O2) fuel cell with porous carbon electrodes in aqueous KOH; H2 oxidised at the anode, O2 reduced at the cathode.

Concept. A fuel cell continuously converts the energy of combustion of a fuel (H2H_2) directly into electrical energy. H2H_2 and O2O_2 are bubbled through porous carbon electrodes (containing a catalyst like finely divided Pt/Pd) into concentrated aqueous KOHKOH (or NaOHNaOH).
