Z=R2+(XL−XC)2Z = \sqrt{R^2 + (X_L - X_C)^2} and I=V/ZI = V/Z, with XL=ωLX_L=\omega L, XC=1/ωCX_C=1/\omega C.

Phasor diagram for a series LCR circuit connected to an AC source

Setup: In a series LCR circuit the same current i=I0sin⁡ωti = I_0\sin\omega t flows through RR, LL and CC. The voltage phasors are:

  • VR=IRV_R = IR, in phase with II;
  • VL=IXLV_L = IX_L, leading II by 90∘90^\circ (XL=ωLX_L = \omega L);
  • VC=IXCV_C = IX_C, lagging II by 90∘90^\circ (XC=1/ωCX_C = 1/\omega C).

Phasor diagram: Take II along the reference axis. VRV_R is along II; VLV_L is 90∘90^\circ ahead; VCV_C is 90∘90^\circ behind. Since VLV_L and VCV_C are opposite, their resultant is (VL−VC)(V_L - V_C) perpendicular to VRV_R.

Resultant voltage: By the parallelogram (Pythagoras), …
