α-source → collimator → thin gold foil → rotatable ZnS-screen detector that counts α-particles scattered at different angles.

Schematic arrangement of the Geiger-Marsden alpha-particle scattering experiment
Schematic arrangement of the Geiger-Marsden alpha-particle scattering experiment

Arrangement (what to draw and label):

  1. A radioactive source of α-particles enclosed in a lead block with a narrow hole, producing a fine, collimated beam.
  2. The beam strikes a thin gold foil (a few hundred atoms thick).
  3. A fluorescent (zinc-sulphide) screen backed by a microscope is mounted so it can be rotated about the foil to observe the number of α-particles scattered at each angle θ\theta.

Each α-particle hitting the screen produces a tiny scintillation, counted through the microscope. The whole assembly is kept in an evacuated chamber.
