Ohm's law fails for non-ohmic devices (non-linear VV–II), when VV–II depends on the sign/direction of VV (e.g. diodes), and where the relation is not single-valued (e.g. GaAs).

Concept. Ohm's law states V=IRV = IR with RR constant, giving a straight-line VV–II graph through the origin. It is an empirical law valid only for ohmic conductors within limited conditions.

Limitations (any two).

  1. Non-linear VV–II: For semiconductor devices (diode, transistor, thermistor) the VV–II graph is a curve, not a straight line — VV is not proportional to II.
  2. Direction dependence: For a diode the relation between VV and II depends on the sign (polarity) of VV; it conducts easily one way and not the other.
  3. Non-unique relation: In some materials (e.g. GaAs) the VV–II relation is not single-valued — the same value of current may correspond to more than one voltage. …
