Ohm's law fails when V is not proportional to I, when the V–I behaviour depends on the direction of V, or when the V–I relation is non-unique (multi-valued).

Ohm's law (V=IRV = IR, RR constant) holds only for ohmic conductors under steady conditions. Its limitations (any three):

  1. Non-linear V–I relation: for many materials VV is not proportional to II; the V–I graph is not a straight line (e.g. semiconductor diodes).

  2. Dependence on the sign of V: the current can depend on the direction of the applied voltage. Reversing VV (same magnitude) does not simply reverse II — as in a p–n junction diode which conducts easily one way but not the other. …
