Work function ϕ0\phi_0 = minimum energy to free an electron from the metal. Einstein: hν=ϕ0+Kmaxh\nu=\phi_0+K_{max} (photon energy = work function + max KE of ejected electron).

Work function. When light falls on a metal, an electron can escape only if it receives at least a certain minimum energy to overcome the attractive forces holding it in the metal. This minimum energy is the work function ϕ0\phi_0 (also =hu0= h u_0, where u0 u_0 is the threshold frequency). It is a property of the metal.

Einstein's photoelectric equation. Light is absorbed as photons of energy hνh\nu. One photon gives all its energy to one electron; part (ϕ0\phi_0) is used to free the electron and the rest appears as the electron's kinetic energy. By conservation of energy:

hν=ϕ0+Kmax⇒Kmax=hν−ϕ0.h\nu = \phi_0 + K_{max}\quad\Rightarrow\quad K_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0.
