A conducting rod of length ll moving with velocity vv perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field BB develops a motional emf ε=Blv\varepsilon = Blv, arising from the magnetic (Lorentz) force on the free charges in the rod.

Derivation:

Consider a straight conducting rod PQ of length ll placed on a pair of frictionless conducting rails in a uniform magnetic field B⃗\vec{B} directed into the plane. The rod is moved with a constant velocity v⃗\vec{v} perpendicular to its length and perpendicular to B⃗\vec{B}.

Method 1 — Motional EMF from Lorentz force:

Each free electron in the rod moves with velocity vv along with the rod, so it experiences a magnetic force

F=qvBF = qvB

This force pushes the charges along the rod, accumulating charge at the ends and setting up an electric field until equilibrium. The work done in moving a unit positive charge from one end to the other equals the emf. The force per unit charge is vBvB, and over the length ll the emf is

ε=(vB) l=Blv\varepsilon = (vB)\,l = Blv

Method 2 — Faraday's law (flux change): …
