Primary data are collected through personal interview, indirect oral investigation, information from correspondents, mailed questionnaires, and enumerator-filled questionnaires; a personal interview is accurate and yields good responses but is costly, slow and open to interviewer bias.

From the Kerala Plus One (DHSE) Statistics for Economics chapter 'Collection of Data', primary data are gathered originally by the investigator through the following methods:

  • Direct personal interview (investigation): The investigator personally contacts and questions each respondent face to face.
  • Indirect oral investigation: Information is obtained from people who know about the informants (used when respondents cannot be contacted directly).
  • Information from local sources / correspondents: Local agents or correspondents send in the required information periodically.
  • Mailed questionnaire: A printed questionnaire is mailed to respondents, who fill it in and return it.
  • Questionnaire filled by enumerators: Trained enumerators visit respondents and record their answers on the questionnaire. (Telephone interviews are also used.)

Two advantages and two disadvantages of the Personal Interview method:

AdvantagesDisadvantages
High accuracy and reliability, as the investigator gathers data directlyVery costly and time-consuming, especially over a wide area
