China went from post-1949 central planning (Great Leap Forward, communes) to phased market reforms from 1978 (agriculture first, then industry and trade, with SEZs and dual pricing), achieving fast growth.

Phase 1 - Central planning (1949 onwards):

  3. The Cultural Revolution (1966-76) disrupted the economy further. Growth in this period was slow and marked by shortages.

Phase 2 - Reforms from 1978:

5. Reforms then extended to industry - state enterprises got more autonomy and private/township enterprises were allowed.
