With exclusive classes of width 5 (0–5, 5–10, … 35–40), the 25 values give frequencies 3, 8, 2, 5, 2, 3, 1, 1 (total 25).

This is a frequency distribution from the Kerala Plus One (DHSE) Statistics for Economics chapter 'Organisation of Data'. In the exclusive method, the upper limit of a class is excluded from it and counted in the next class (e.g. a value of 5 goes into 5–10, not 0–5).

Step 1 — Range and classes: The 25 values range from 1 to 36, so with width 5 we need classes 0–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15–20, 20–25, 25–30, 30–35, 35–40.

Step 2 — Tally each observation into its class (28,17,15,22,29,1,8,3,10,5,3,36,27,18,9,15,11,9,7,32,19,20,6,9,5):

Class IntervalTally of valuesFrequency
0 – 51, 3, 33
5 – 108, 5, 9, 9, 7, 6, 9, 58
10 – 1510, 112
15 – 2017, 15, 18, 15, 195
