(a) Why does poverty exist in India? (4)
- Low economic growth with a large population: The colonial period left a stagnant economy; after independence, growth for long remained too slow to absorb a rapidly rising population, keeping per-capita incomes low.
- Unemployment and underemployment: Lack of enough productive jobs, especially in rural areas, means many people have little or irregular income.
- Unequal distribution of income and assets: Land and wealth are concentrated in a few hands; the majority own little productive asset, so the benefits of growth do not reach them.
- Indebtedness: The poor borrow at high interest from moneylenders and remain trapped in a cycle of debt. (Social factors, price rise and low levels of education/skills add to the problem.)
