Red tides result from blooms of red dinoflagellates (e.g. Gonyaulax); their toxins kill marine life.

Dinoflagellates are photosynthetic protists, many of which are marine. Some, such as Gonyaulax, contain red pigments. When conditions are favourable they multiply so rapidly and in such large numbers that they colour the surface of the sea red - a phenomenon called a red tide.
