- The scientists: In 1838, German botanist Matthias Schleiden, studying plant cells, observed that all plants are composed of cells. In 1839, German zoologist Theodor Schwann, studying animal cells, extended this observation to animal tissues and proposed that a membrane enclosing every cell is a universal feature. Together, their combined work in 1838-39 is credited with formulating the cell theory.
