Plasticity is the capacity of plants to develop different forms of an organ in response to environment or age; heterophylly is a classic example.

Plants often follow different developmental pathways to form structures of different shapes in response to their environment or to different phases of their life. This ability is called plasticity.

A good example is heterophylly (the occurrence of different leaf shapes on the same plant):

  • In cotton, coriander and larkspur, the leaves of the juvenile plant are different in shape from those of the mature plant (heterophylly due to age/phase).
  • In the aquatic plant buttercup (Ranunculus), the leaves formed under water are highly dissected (narrow, thread-like), while those formed in air are broad and lobed (heterophylly due to environment). …
