Each listed function is a hallmark physiological effect of one of the three growth-promoting plant hormones — auxin, gibberellin, or cytokinin — and sorting them by hormone gives two functions under each.

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins each produce characteristic, well-documented effects on growth. Matching each listed function to the hormone classically responsible for it:

Auxin

  • (iv) Apical dominance — the growing apical bud produces auxin that suppresses the growth of lateral (axillary) buds below it; removing the apical bud (and its auxin source) releases the lateral buds to grow.
  • (v) Initiate rooting in stem cuttings — auxins (such as IAA/IBA) are widely used commercially to induce adventitious root formation in stem cuttings, which is why root-promoting powders/rooting hormones are auxin-based.

Gibberellin

  • (i) Internode elongation of sugarcane — gibberellins promote elongation of the stem/internodes; in sugarcane, spraying gibberellins increases the length of the internodes, which increases the yield of the cane (i.e. the sugar-bearing stem).
  • (iii) Bolting — gibberellins cause 'bolting', the rapid elongation of the floral axis/stem in rosette plants (e.g. cabbage) just before flowering, converting the short, compact rosette into a tall flowering stalk.

Cytokinin …
