VSEPR: shape depends on the number of electron pairs, which arrange to minimise repulsion (lp-lp > lp-bp > bp-bp). BF3 = trigonal planar (120 deg); NH3 = pyramidal (107 deg); H2O = bent (104.5 deg).

(i) Two postulates of VSEPR theory:

  1. The geometry of a molecule is decided by the total number of electron pairs (bonding and non-bonding/lone) around the central atom.
  2. These electron pairs orient themselves to be as far apart as possible so that repulsion between them is minimum; the strength of repulsion decreases in the order lone pair-lone pair > lone pair-bond pair > bond pair-bond pair.

(ii) Shapes:

  • BF3: boron has 3 bond pairs and no lone pair -> 3 electron pairs -> sp2 -> trigonal planar with F-B-F angles of 120 degrees.
  • NH3: nitrogen has 3 bond pairs and 1 lone pair -> 4 electron pairs -> sp3 (tetrahedral arrangement), but with one lone pair the molecular shape is trigonal pyramidal; the lone pair pushes the bonds together, reducing the H-N-H angle to about 107 degrees. …
