(a) Hydrogen peroxide readily decomposes: 2H2O2 -> 2H2O + O2. This decomposition is catalysed by light, heat, dust particles and by traces of alkali (ordinary glass surfaces are slightly alkaline). To minimise decomposition, H2O2 is stored in wax-lined (smooth, non-alkaline) glass or plastic bottles kept in the dark, often with a stabiliser such as urea; this excludes light and avoids catalytic surfaces.
