(a) Saline (ionic) hydrides form when hydrogen combines with highly electropositive metals -- the alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and the heavier alkaline earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba; Be and Mg are exceptions and form more covalent hydrides). Hydrogen exists as the hydride ion, H-, and the compound is an ionic lattice of metal cations and H- ions, e.g. NaH, KH, CaH2, BaH2. They are white crystalline solids with high melting points, conduct electricity in the molten state (liberating H2 at the anode, confirming H-), and react vigorously with water to liberate hydrogen: NaH + H2O -> NaOH + H2.
