Question of 130

Q.Write the IUPAC names of the following compounds :

(i) CH3-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH3 (an eight-carbon chain with methyl branches on carbons 2, 5 and 6, drawn with CH3 substituents hanging below the chain at those positions).
(1)
(ii) CH3-C(=O)-CH2-CH2-CH2-COOH (a six-carbon chain: a methyl ketone (C=O) at one end, a carboxylic acid -COOH at the other end). (1)

Number each main chain to give the lowest possible locants (respecting the principal characteristic group's priority in (ii)), then name the substituents/functional groups.

  1. CH3–CH(CH3)–CH2–CH2–CH(CH3)–CH(CH3)–CH2–CH3 The longest continuous chain has 8 carbons → parent name octane. Numbering from the left: C1(CH3)–C2(CH3 branch)–C3(H2)–C4(H2)–C5(CH3 branch)–C6(CH3 branch)–C7(H2)–C8(CH3). This gives methyl substituents at positions 2, 5, 6 (locant set {2,5,6}). Check numbering from the right end instead: substituents would fall at positions 3, 4, 7 (locant set {3,4,7}). Comparing the two sets at the first point of difference, 2 < 3, so numbering from the left (giving 2,5,6) is correct — it gives the lower locants. Name: 2,5,6-trimethyloctane
  2. CH3–C(=O)–CH2–CH2–CH2–COOH …
