Canal rays (anode rays) are streams of positively charged particles produced in a discharge tube; unlike cathode rays, their properties depend on the gas used.

Canal rays were discovered by Eugen Goldstein (1886) using a discharge tube with a perforated cathode; positive rays passed through the holes ("canals") in the cathode and were observed on the side opposite the cathode rays.

Two characteristic properties:
