Four quantum numbers together specify the size, shape, orientation and spin of an electron's orbital; Pauli's principle says no two electrons can share all four.

(i) The four quantum numbers

  1. Principal quantum number (n) — determines the size and energy of the orbital (shell).
  2. Azimuthal (angular momentum) quantum number (l) — determines the shape of the orbital (sub-shell: s, p, d, f).
  3. Magnetic quantum number (ml) — determines the orientation of the orbital in space.
  4. Spin quantum number (ms) — describes the spin orientation of the electron (+½ or −½).

(ii) Pauli's exclusion principle
