Carbon monoxide is toxic because it outcompetes oxygen for haemoglobin binding sites, cutting off the body's oxygen supply; diamond and graphite are the two classic crystalline allotropes of carbon.

  1. Why is carbon monoxide poisonous? Haemoglobin in the blood is responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues. Carbon monoxide (CO) has a very strong affinity for haemoglobin — about 200 times greater than that of oxygen — and readily binds to it to form a stable complex called carboxyhaemoglobin. Once CO occupies these binding sites, haemoglobin can no longer bind and transport oxygen effectively. This starves body tissues and organs (including the brain) of oxygen, which, if severe enough, can lead to unconsciousness and death. This is why CO is described as a poisonous/toxic gas.
  2. Two crystalline allotropes of carbon Allotropes are different structural forms of the same element. The classic crystalline (well-ordered lattice) allotropes of carbon are: …
