By Fajans' rules the most covalent of NaCl, BeCl2 and AlCl3 is AlCl3, because Al³⁺ (charge +3, small radius) has the highest polarising power.

Fajans' rules state that a bond between a cation and an anion becomes more covalent when:

  • the cation is small,
  • the cation has a high positive charge (both increase its polarising power), and
  • the anion is large and easily polarisable.

The anion (Cl⁻) is the same in all three chlorides, so the covalent character is decided by the polarising power of the cation:

  • Na⁺ — charge +1, comparatively large radius → low polarising power → NaCl is essentially ionic.
  • Be²⁺ — charge +2, very small radius → high polarising power → BeCl2 is appreciably covalent.
  • Al³⁺ — charge +3 in a small radius → the highest charge density / polarising power of the three → it distorts (polarises) the Cl⁻ electron cloud most strongly, forcing the greatest electron sharing. …
