Potassium is the classic alkali metal that forms a superoxide (KO2) on burning in excess oxygen; lithium behaves anomalously compared with the rest of Group 1 because of its very small size and high polarising power.

  1. Alkali metal forming superoxide When the heavier alkali metals are burnt in excess air/oxygen, they form superoxides (containing the O2⁻ ion) rather than simple oxides. Potassium is the standard example: K + O2 → KO2 (potassium superoxide). (Rubidium and caesium behave similarly, but potassium is the one usually cited at this level.)
