Newton's law of cooling: a hot body loses heat at a rate proportional to how much hotter it is than its surroundings, valid for small temperature differences.

Newton's Law of Cooling states:

"The rate of loss of heat of a body is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the body and its surroundings, provided the temperature difference is small."

Mathematically, if T is the temperature of the body and T₀ is the temperature of the surroundings:

−dQ/dt ∝ (T − T₀)

or

−dQ/dt = k(T − T₀)

where k is a positive constant depending on the surface area and nature of the body. Equivalently, since dQ = mc·dT, the rate of fall of temperature is also proportional to (T − T₀):

−dT/dt ∝ (T − T₀)
