Sound travels Pinna → canal → Tympanum → Ossicles → oval window → cochlear fluid → Basilar membrane → hair cells → Tectorial membrane → auditory nerve → brain; Utricle belongs to balance, not hearing.

The pathway of sound transmission through the human ear follows a fixed anatomical sequence:

  • Sound waves are collected by the Pinna and channelled through the Auditory canal to strike the ear drum.
  • A = Tympanum (ear drum): vibrates in response to the sound waves reaching it.
  • B = Ear Ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes): these three small bones in the middle ear pick up the tympanic vibrations and amplify/transmit them to the oval window.
  • The vibrations at the oval window set up pressure waves in the fluid of the cochlea (perilymph/endolymph).
  • C = Basilar membrane: these fluid waves cause the basilar membrane (which bears the Organ of Corti) to vibrate.
  • This stimulates the Hair cells of the Organ of Corti sitting on the basilar membrane. …
