(a) What is a Realisation Account?

A Realisation Account is a nominal account opened at the time of dissolution of a firm. All assets (except cash/bank) are transferred to its debit and all outside liabilities to its credit. The sale proceeds of assets are credited and the payment of liabilities and realisation expenses debited. The balancing figure is the profit or loss on realisation, which is shared among the partners in their profit-sharing ratio.

(b) Modes of dissolution of a firm

  1. Dissolution by agreement — with the consent of all partners or as per the deed.
  2. Compulsory dissolution — when all partners (or all but one) become insolvent, or the business becomes illegal.
  3. Dissolution on the happening of a contingency — expiry of the term, completion of the venture, death or insolvency of a partner (subject to agreement).
  4. Dissolution by notice — in a partnership at will, any partner may dissolve by giving written notice.
  5. Dissolution by court — e.g. insanity, misconduct, permanent incapacity of a partner, persistent breach of agreement, or where the business can only be carried on at a loss.
