Communication is a process with seven main elements — sender, encoding, message, media/channel, receiver, decoding and feedback — plus noise (any disturbance). The sender encodes an idea, sends the message through a channel to the receiver, who decodes it and responds with feedback, while noise can distort the message at any point.

The elements of communication are studied under the Directing chapter of Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce, whose content aligns with the NCERT Business Studies curriculum. Communication is complete only when the receiver understands the message as the sender intended and responds.

Diagram of the communication process (read left to right, with feedback looping back and noise affecting the whole flow):

           NOISE (disturbance at any stage)

Explaining each element:

  • Sender: The person who conceives the idea and starts the communication by wishing to convey it to someone else.
  • Message: The subject matter or content of communication — the idea, information, order or opinion that the sender wants to pass on.
  • Encoding: The process of converting the idea/message into symbols such as words, pictures, gestures or signs that can be transmitted to the receiver.
  • Media (channel): The path or means through which the encoded message travels from sender to receiver — for example, face-to-face talk, telephone, letter, e-mail or notice board. …
