Packaging is done at three levels: the primary package (the product's immediate container), the secondary package (extra protective packing removed before use), and the transportation or shipping package (bulk packing for storage and transport).

Packaging means designing and producing the container or wrapper in which a product is placed. It protects the product, makes it convenient to handle, and helps in promotion. Packaging is carried out at three different levels:

  • Primary package: This is the product's immediate container — the one in direct contact with the product. In some cases it is kept throughout the life of the product; in others it is thrown away after use. Examples: the tube of a toothpaste, a matchbox, a plastic pouch of a beverage.
  • Secondary package: This is the additional layer of protection given over the primary package. It is usually removed when the product is about to be used, but is retained to protect the product until then.
