Planning is the mental, forward-looking process of setting objectives and deciding the course of action in advance; its main features are that it focuses on objectives, is the primary function of management, is pervasive, continuous, futuristic, involves decision making, and is a mental exercise.

Planning is the first chapter among the management functions in Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce, whose syllabus aligns with the NCERT Business Studies curriculum. It provides direction and reduces uncertainty for the whole organisation.

Explaining any five features:

  • Planning focuses on achieving objectives: Every plan is made to accomplish certain pre-decided goals. It specifies the objectives and the actions needed to reach them, so planning is meaningful only in relation to objectives.
  • Planning is the primary function of management: Planning precedes all other functions — organising, staffing, directing and controlling all follow the plan. It provides the base on which the other functions are built, so it is the first function performed.
  • Planning is pervasive: Planning is required at all levels of management (top, middle and lower) and in every department. Only the scope and nature differ — top managers plan for the whole organisation, lower managers plan day-to-day operations. …
