Selection is choosing the most suitable applicants for a job; it is a 'negative' process because it rejects more people than it selects; the tests commonly used are intelligence, aptitude, personality, trade/proficiency and interest tests.   1. What is Selection? (1 mark) Selection is the process of identifying and choosing the best and the most suitable persons out of the pool of applicants for the various jobs in the organisation. In short, it is the process of picking the right candidate for the right job.
  2. Why is it called a negative process? (2 marks) Selection is called a negative process because it involves the rejection or elimination of unsuitable candidates, whereas recruitment is a positive process because it attracts and increases the number of applicants. During selection, candidates are screened at each successive stage and the unfit ones are rejected, so at the end only a few of the many applicants are chosen — more people are turned away than are taken in. That is why it is described as negative.
  3. Important tests used for selecting employees (5 marks) Selection tests are standardised tools used to measure a candidate's abilities, aptitudes and personality traits. The important ones are:
  1. Intelligence tests — measure the candidate's level of intelligence, mental alertness, reasoning, memory and ability to learn and make judgements (indicated by the Intelligence Quotient).
  2. Aptitude tests — measure a person's potential and capacity to learn a particular skill or job in the future; they help predict how well the candidate will perform after training.
  3. Personality tests — assess the overall personality of the candidate — emotional maturity, temperament, values, motivation and social skills — traits that are difficult to observe directly but affect job success. …
