Many developing, biodiversity-rich nations (like India) possess vast reserves of biological resources and the traditional knowledge of their use built up by local communities over generations. Multinational companies and organisations from technologically advanced countries have sometimes used these bio-resources — obtaining patents on products or processes derived from them — without paying reasonable compensation or getting authorisation from the country/community that originally owns/discovered them. This practice is called biopiracy.
