A bioreactor is a vessel in which raw materials are biologically converted, using microbial, plant, animal or human cells (or their enzymes), into specific products, under optimum conditions of temperature, pH, substrate, salts, vitamins and oxygen.
(a) Identification (based on the figure):
- (i) Stirred-tank bioreactor: a cylindrical vessel fitted with a pressure gauge and, running down through the vessel, a central rotating shaft carrying multiple sets of stirring blades/paddles along its length, which continuously agitate the yellow culture medium inside.
- (ii) Sparged (bubble-column) bioreactor: a rectangular vessel with a rotating sparger/agitator assembly at the top that sprays/bubbles gas (air) downward into the blue culture medium, with a perforated support plate near the bottom; here, aeration and mixing are achieved by the rising gas bubbles rather than by a submerged mechanical stirrer.
(b) Comparing their functioning:
| Feature | Stirred-tank bioreactor | Sparged bioreactor |
|---|---|---|
| Agitation | A mechanical stirrer/agitator with blades on a central shaft physically mixes the culture medium. | No submerged mechanical stirrer; the assembly at the top sparges (bubbles) air/gas into the medium. |
