Deforestation — the large-scale clearing of forests for timber, agriculture, mining or human settlement — has several serious environmental consequences, of which any two may be cited:
- Loss of biodiversity: Forests are home to the majority of the world's terrestrial plant and animal species. Clearing forest destroys their habitat, driving species to local extinction and drastically reducing biodiversity.
- Soil erosion and desertification: Tree roots bind the soil and reduce surface run-off. Without forest cover, topsoil is rapidly washed or blown away, degrading soil fertility and, over time, converting once-forested land into desert-like, unproductive land.
- Disruption of the water cycle/local climate: Trees contribute substantially to transpiration and local rainfall generation; deforestation reduces local rainfall, lowers groundwater recharge, and increases the risk of both drought and flash flooding. …
