The Reimer-Tiemann reaction converts phenol into salicylaldehyde (o-hydroxybenzaldehyde) using chloroform and NaOH.

When phenol is treated with chloroform (CHCl3) and aqueous NaOH at about 340 K, and the reaction mixture is subsequently hydrolysed with acid, a -CHO group is introduced at the position ortho to the -OH group, forming salicylaldehyde.

Mechanism outline: NaOH generates dichlorocarbene (:CCl2) from CHCl3; the electron-rich phenoxide ring attacks this electrophilic carbene at the ortho position; hydrolysis of the resulting dichloromethyl intermediate gives the aldehyde.
